Alpine Exposures is a small and simple company set up for the purpose of trying to promote some of the best mountain photography in the world. The site is run with a community feel to it and all the individual phtographers are consulted on changes as well as kept fully up to date on the direction that the site is going in. There are no contracts involved and the photographers receive an 85% return on their sales- higher than any agency we have come across.

The Photographers

Dave 'Cubby' Cuthbertson

Dave ‘Cubby’ Cuthbertson has been described as a legend in Scottish climbing with many ground breaking first ascents to his credit. He was born in Edinburgh in 1958. With little more than a few o-levels he left school at the age of seventeen to pursue his uncompromising passion for climbing. During an early trip to the Himalaya Cubby discovered, with near fatal consequences, his inability to acclimatise effectively, and so turned to a less glamorous side of climbing – the competition circuit. He secured a position in the British Team, competing both at home and in other parts of the world, and often against young climbers half his own age. Giving the ‘young guns’ a run for their money might be good for ones ego but climbing at this level and the training required was gruelling. By the late 90’s 25 years at the cutting edge, was beginning to take its toll. To alleviate some of the physical stress, Cubby turned to photography, both as a passion and as an alternative source of income. Self taught he is now widely regarded as one of the most accomplished outdoor photographers in the UK.

Jonathan Griffth

Jonathan Griffith started out on an old FM5 manual SLR and quickly realised that he had a passion for photographing people in some of the most beautiful landscapes- even if he hadnt quite worked out how to fully work a manual camera! After dedicating any holiday time away in the French and Swiss alps he moved out to Chamonix after graduating to pursue a career in photography and has never looked back. He has been published in the major climbing and skiing magazines in both the US and the UK, as well as done commercial work for larger companies such as Osprey and Easyjet. He now works full time as a freelance photographer as well as running and setting up the Alpine Exposures company and site

"His keen eye for the alpine landscape not only results in pictures that show the truth of what it’s really like to be there, but he also captures something about the mountains that you can’t put into words, even if you wanted to. He shows glimpses into the mountains, and the vertical life of those who pursue them, that is rarified and fine. It shows a reality through captured moments: night photos that are so still, you can feel the deep silence and the quiet mass of the black silhouetted mountains… or the moment of intense focus when placing a crucial piece of gear on a climb… or the moments of solitude and reflection on a morning approach.
I suppose that what I’m trying to say here is that Jon’s pictures are special in part because he captures on film exactly what so many of us feel when the mountains call to us."

Patrik Lindqvist

Capturing images from some of the world’s most famous mountain play-grounds is a ‘dream job’ for Patrik.
Envy and admiration aside, Patrik backs up this need to be around big-mountain action, with dedication, organization and commitment to be one step ahead of his subjects… frozen fingers or not. “If I have to climb mountains and sleep overnight in a tent at -20 degree, then so be it. It’s a beautiful world out there and I will forever strive to capture it”.
A move to Chamonix in 2005 has been the necessary step to assist Patrik and his quest to work with athletes in terrain the Mecca for alpinism and big mountain freeriding is famous for.
It is within this ‘extreme’ play-ground where Patrik strives to compose images encompassing epic scenes, next level action and beautiful natural surroundings. While capturing action in the backcountry is his forte, Patrik is just as adept at shooting freestyle or freezing a candid moment on the piste.
His work appears in numerous magazines, and with his life settled in Chamonix, Patrik is set to explore further into the expanse of the Mont-Blanc massif, but also into the lives of people who call this rugged mountain setting their home.
So the next time you head up the infamous Aiguille du Midi for fresh tracks, watch out for this lensmen, because he may just be pointing his Canon EOS at you.

Adam Long

Photography has been a natural career progression for Adam. Following a childhood obsessed by nature and mountains he studied Environmental Geosciences at Sheffield University, a period during which his photography evolved from merely a record of his adventures into a tool for artistic impression. Finding inspiration first from the local Peak district, and latterly from some of the wildest corners of the world, his fascination with everything in the natural world from insects to mountain ranges has created many memorable images.
Adam’s images regularly feature in all the UK climbing magazines (Climb, Climber, Summit, Friction as well as the now closed On the Edge and High) as well as more widely-read publications such as The Times.
Clients include:
Beyond Hope, The BMC, CSE Space Management, DMM, French Rock, Great Orme Copper Mines, John Muir Trust, Lyon Equipment, Metolius, Rotovision, Spanset

Ian Parnell

Ian describes his approach as “photography from the front line”. The front line here is far from the edge of the studio lights, up into the heights of the Himalayas, or the depths of cold of the Patagonian winter. One of Britain’s leading alpinists and twice nominated for the Piolet D’Or, Ian has made significant ascents in the Himalayas, Alaska, Kyrygyzstan, Greenland and Patagonia. Fellow alpinist Andy Kirkpatrick describes Ian’s approach “There’s been times when I’ve seen Ian trim his gear to the minimum, chucking out his sleeping bag just to squeeze in more camera equipment. The fact that he’s willing to suffer for his art means he brings back photos that few others can”.
Ian has worked with many of the world leaders in the outdoor industry including Adidas, Black Diamond, Crux, Lightwave, Mountain Equipment, Mountain Hardwear, The North Face, Osprey, Patagonia, Rab Equipment and Wild Country. His images have been published in the Mail on Sunday, Independent on Sunday, Living Well Magazine, Men’s Health and Men’s Fitness with lead articles for Alpinist (USA), Rock and Ice (USA), Gripped (Canada), Rock and Snow (Japan), Campo Base (Spain), Montagnes (France), and On the Edge, High and Climber (All UK). Ian’s work has also been published in books written by Reinhold Messner, Alex Huber, Sean Isaac and Neil Gresham as well as being cameraman on the film Cold Haul which is available on DVD. Most recently, he filmed and featured in his joint winter Patagonian effort with Andy Kirkpatrik – The film, ‘Patagonian Winter’, won Best Mountain Adventure Film.

David Pickford

David is a freelance photographer and writer, working for a wide range of media and business clients on an international basis. He is also one of the leading rock climbers in the UK, with an impressive portfolio of ascents from Britain and Europe to the mountains of Arabia, Central Asia, North Africa, and the Far East.
In 2003, David took the unconventional career move of riding a dilapidated Russian two-stroke motorcycle some 20,000 kilometres across East Asia, from Vietnam to Indonesia via China. It was on this expedition that a long-term interest in photography developed into a professional commitment to the camera, and became the perfect complement to another consuming passion: travel, documentary and essay writing. David combines his photography with written journalism for traditional and new media.
David’s list of professional clients is long and wide ranging.
Between a busy schedule of international projects, careering between continents armed with a bag of cameras, a notebook, and a pack full of climbing gear, David still finds time for pioneering new climbs around Britain. His longer trips often involve adventure motorcycling expeditions combined with rock climbing explorations, the most recent of which was a journey around the Indian subcontinent on an Enfield Bullet.
